Torquay ~ Paignton ~ Brixham Activities

The English Riviera, Paignton, Torquay and Brixham, offers an abundance of sport & leisure opportunities.

imagesSeveral of the regions finest golf course’s are within a short drive of Torbay offering a challenge for golfers of any experience. You’ll also find bowling greens, walking, cycling, an abundance of watersports.

imagesWith 22 miles of beautiful coastline, watersports play a large part in the numerous leisure activities available to visitors. When visiting Paignton, within a few miles you’ll be able to enjoy a multitude of water sports; safe diving with both BSAC and PADI diving schools, sailing, with dinghies and “cats” for hire, plus Paignton sailing instruction if needed. Fishing with from shore and charter boat (all harbour areas) is very popular, with some great catches this year.

imgresWater-skiing with tuition is a favourite and windsurfing from the sandy bays is growing in interest daily. Many of the waterfront areas have shops for hire of the necessary equipment and offer training most of the year round. The harbour areas in particular, Torquay, Paignton and Brixham have comprehensive suppliers for all these sports.

images-1The younger members of the team can hire pedalos or “canoes” on most of the large beaches, whilst motor boats can be hired for fishing or pottering around the bay from beaches, harbours and the local river areas.

For the more daring, there is even a legendary four mile swim across the Bay from Meadfoot to Brixham (we wouldn’t recommend this to those still using armbands!)

imgresOther popular sporting activities include tennis, squash, badminton, pitch & putt, bowling greens, ten pin bowling and countless more! Many hotels have tennis courts, so check these out on the accommodation pages. There are also a number of municipal courts across the bay that welcome visitors all year around. The Torquay squash club at Barton is always happy to receive visitors and has an excellent bar and snooker room.

Pitch and putt at Goodrington and Broadsands is always great fun and a good way to stay fit and see the scenery. Ten pin bowling in Torquay, or bowls on Torquay sea front will keep the whole family occupied. The main leisure centres in Paignton and Torquay have swimming pools and lots of other resources for the active family especially on the odd inclement day!

phpThumb_generated_thumbnailjpgWe mustn’t forget our golfers. There are a lot of great courses close to Paignton and Torbay, a number of which are featured on this site. Paignton makes a great short break for Golfers in both summer and winter. When many other courses are snowbound or unplayable the clement Torbay weather ensures that a full 18 holes can be completed!

For those people preferring to stay on dry land, you will find some of the most beautiful coastal walks in the country to enjoy. The South West Coast Path National Trail has 630 miles of superb coastal walking and stretches from Minehead on the edge of the Exmoor National Park to the shores of Poole Harbour in Dorset.

imgresThe Torbay stretch of this coastal path is one of the most enjoyable and stretches from south of Brixham through to Maidencombe and on to Teignmouth. Simply walk to the beach, turn left or right and carry on until morning! The walk is always well signposted, across greens, through woods, up hill and down dale.
