SQUASH IN TORQUAY
If you were to read this article you would
wonder why we were writing about such a low key sport
that’s even struggling to make the 2006 Olympics, but
fact of the matter is that squash in Torquay is fast
growing in popularity and is attracting more and more
people to play the game. It is again starting to be
recognized as a good way to keep fit. Even the young
ladies are starting to ditch their leggings and aerobic
classes for the game of squash!
There are 4 squash facilities in Torquay,
3 of which are located in Torquay hotels.
There are 2 courts at the Livermead House hotel, 2 courts
at the Palace Hotel and 2 squash courts at the Imperial
Hotel.
About 95% of squash in Torquay is played at the bays
premier squash club Torquay Squash Centre, located in
Barton. Torquay Squash Centre is a members club but
is also open to non members, boasting 5 squash courts
including an exhibition glass back that seats more than
100 people. Other facilities in the club include a well
equipped gym which includes a jogging machine, rowing
machine, exercise bikes and stepper. Also found within
the club are 2 snooker tables, sun shower, excellent
after sport shower facilities and changing plus a cosy
bar and lounge with satellite television. Food is also
served with a good variety of hot and cold snacks and
meals.
The squash centre has 7 men’s and 2 ladies
teams varying from top county standard to your every
day club standard suiting all standards. The junior
set up at the club is arguably one of the finest in
the south west boasting nationally ranked players in
4 different age groups. Juniors are encouraged to start
playing from a very young age, as young as 5! The club
has a Saturday fun morning starting at 9am and finishing
at 1pm open to young boys and girls of all standards.
For players determined to improve, the
club has a county standard club professional available
for one on one coaching sessions.
Torquays young squash stars are definitely
something to watch out for with local talents breaking
into European and even world status in both junior and
men’s u23’s level. These players can be seen in action
for Torquay Squash Centers first team who play at home
on Monday nights and you will be able to see for yourself
the fast pace and high level of fitness and agility
required at the top level of the game.
