We dine out quite frequently in Torbay and have created our own list of favourite places.Recommendations are always the best way of choosing a restaurant and we have therefore given you a very selective list of what we think are good. Good is subjective of course. If you wish to see a complete list of eateries then please visit our business search page and select "restaurant". This is just a listing however without references. If you would like a place on this page and you feel you qualify then please contact us We have provided two elements to the Restaurants section. The first is a simple listing by name and the second is a recommendation by ourselves. As residents we eat out quite often and think this a good list of places to enjoy. A good meal can make an evening, a poor meal can even ruin your holiday!

John Burton Race, New Angel, Dartmouth
We had to try this one! THE NEW ANGEL is probably South Devons most famous restaurant. We've watched it on TV, we've seen the antics, seen the labour and love!. So what was it like? The food was just as you would expect, superb!! Did the host cook! He certainly did. No scenes or unexpected events, but that's TV. If you come to South Devon, you must try this restaurant. Even the outside menu gets crowded! Good website aswell. LINK

Orchid restaurant
We have recently tried this restaurant. "THE ORCHID is a gourmet restaurant situated on the 1st floor of the Corbyn Head Hotel and is hosted by Chefs, Daniel Kay & Marc Evans. Renowned for its 2 rosettes, 3 RAC Ribbons and fine wines, this really is the ideal place to dine for those special occasions. It's imaginative menu, is sure to appeal to the most discerning diner, and it is guaranteed to be a gastronomic delight. We agree with all of this AND the service was excellent with great views over the sea. The Elephant
This restaurant opened autumn of 2003 and is affiliated to the Orestone Manor Hotel, which also has an excellent restaurant. Good choice of elegant cuisine served in a pleasant restaurant with excellent service. Upstairs there is a lovely bar with views across the bay and the harbour. The Elephant is convenient to the town centre being on the harbourside, across the road from Living Coasts and 1 minute walk to the taxi ranks.

The Orange Tree Restaurant
Located on Parkhill Road near the centre of Torquay, we found the service and food to be excellent on both counts. This restaurant has developed a reputation for being innovative, supported with a good wine list. Locally produced ingredients are used if possible and the meals are quite dynamic and diverse. I sampled Smoked Halibut & Cucumber with Lime Salsa followed by pan seared Venison. Fantastic.

Yum Sing Cantonese & Peking Restaurant
Our favourite chinese and cantonese. These restaurants seldom vary in their cuisine, but frequently vary in their quality of food and service. The restaurant is a good size, an extensive menu and is well laid out. There is a large car park and the restaurant is only a 2 minute drive from the harbour side. There is a smoking and no-smoking area and a special function room for parties.

Old Torwood Road, Torquay TQ1 1PN, 01803 293314

No. 7 Fish Bistro
This restaurant we have been to on many occasions. There aren't many fish or seafood restaurants in Torquay and this is the best. Fresh fish, locally caught. Some interesting dishes and some exotic food. Good selection of wines and excellent service. On the harbourside next to Living Coasts.

Hanbury's Fish & Chips
South West fish and chip shop of the year, 1988,1993,1997,1992 and regional finalist in 2002. What more could we say. We always get our take away here or eat in! Excellent!

Princes Street, Babbacombe, 01803 329928 (Takeaway)

Pizza Express
As the name says, its a pizza place. we have tried many pizza houses and this matches any native Italian ones, we ever tried. Part of the Pizza Express chain, the restaurant is right on the harbourside next to the London Inn, in an old bank building on 2 floors. Good ambience, good food, excellent service at reasonable prices!

Willow Tree Vegetarian Restaurant
If you are a vegetarian who likes the natural elements of life at really good prices, in an eatery that's generally pretty full (a good recommendation), travel to Totnes (15-20 min's by car) and visit this restaurant. Its at the top of the High Street. Organic ingredients, vegan options & wines and beers.

87 High Street, Totnes, 01803 862605

Balti Garden, Indian
No list would complete without an Indian restaurant. There are many to choose from of course. We always choose the Balti garden, if for no reason than the food is good and the price is reasonable. The staff are friendly aswell. Its also and the top end of town.
