Coleton Aglow ~ Kingswear
Why not wrap up warm and explore the garden at Coleton Fishacre as it is aglow with festive light? The streams, beautiful trees and exotic features of the garden are lit for Christmas in spectacular fashion and the house is ready for a 1920s Christmas party this December.
The garden at night:
A walk through the garden during Coleton aglow truly delights. The route leads you between twinkling fairy lights down past the front of the house to the Rill Garden where the stream through the centre of the garden is filled with light and the colours of the summer recreated with uplighters. Down through the centre of the garden the ponds and trees are awash with warm and colourful light, and above your heads disco balls glitter. You’ll pass the Quarry where a giant cocktail glass spills champagne bubbles, reminiscent of the party taking place in the house. At the bottom of the garden you’ll reach the tree fern glade, before coming back up the garden to the summer house, where you can take a moment to admire the views across the route you’ve just walked and see the wave of lights cascade down Cathedral Bank.
This walk takes about 40 minutes, after which you can warm up in the gazebo with a mulled wine. There is also a short route which leads past the house to the gazebo and back, if you aren’t up for walking the entire route or you’re looking to avoid steps and steep hills. Dogs are welcome in the garden on short leads.
Christmas in the house:
The Christmas decorations this year have been inspired by a Christmas party which took place at Coleton Fishacre in 1929. The D’Oyly Carte family built Coleton Fishacre as their country home, and spent their time here relaxing and entertaining in style. When you visit the house you’ll see preparations underway for a glamourous 1920s Christmas party just waiting for the guests’ arrival. You’ll be able to try on your party outfit in the handling room, listen to party music playing in the Saloon and there’ll be parlour games in the Sitting Room such as Gilbert and Sullivan charades.
Dates, times and booking:
Coleton aglow is running on Fridays – Sundays from 1 to 17 December and Wednesdays – Sundays from 20 to 31 December. There are two time slots available to book for your visit: 5-6.30pm or 5.30-7pm.
Normal admissions apply for Coleton aglow, and entry is free for National Trust members and under-fives.
Booking is essential; please call 01803 842382 to book. Places are limited: when you book, you will be allocated a parking space. You will need to bring proof of booking with you to be granted admission to the car park.
Trains depart from Queen’s Park Station, Paignton only.
Calling all children – both young and old! You will arrive at Queen’s Park Station, Paignton (TQ4 6AF) for your return journey to Kingswear on the Santa Express. During your trip, you will be entertained by our two-part mini pantomime to get you in the festive spirit (part one on your outward journey and part two on your return journey – c.10 minutes in total).
The beautiful Princess Aurora, her three Fairy Godmothers, Prince Philippe and the wicked Maleficent are the stars of the show. Aurora pricks her finger on an enchanted spinning wheel and the Fairy Godmothers will need your assistance to battle to save Princess Aurora from Maleficent’s evil spell and help Prince Philippe find her. And all so they can live happily ever after!
Father Christmas will visit you at your seat with his sleigh and band of merry helpers. Make sure you help The Fairies and perhaps their wish will be that you receive a gift from Santa. (Children up to 14 years only.) If you have chosen to travel with us on a 15:45 service please feel free to let your kids come in their Jim Jams (pyjamas). Adults welcome to as well if that’s your thing!
Whilst on the Santa Express you will be offered a glass of mulled wine and festive mince pie (adults only). Balloon modelling and lineside I-Spy ensure that every member of the family is involved in this truly magical experience.
This is a fully ticketed event so pre-booking is essential. If you wish to travel with another party please inform us at the time of booking and we will do our utmost to accommodate you all together. We can offer a wheelchair specific carriage that means the whole family can sit together in comfort to enjoy this unique experience. Please let us know when you book. Sorry, only guide dogs allowed.
Dart Music Festival ~ Dartmouth
In 2018, May 11, 12, & 13 ~ We Celebrate 21 Years
In 2018, we continue our ‘ FREE Music for All’ policy, all generously sponsored by fans and businesses.
Over 100 performances, spanning almost every musical genre. Based at venues throughout the town: pubs, churches, restaurants, in the open air – and it’s all FREE. So join us May 2018 11th – 13th.
A Brief history of Dart Music Festival:
The Dart Music Festival was started over 20 years ago – an annual music event over three days, which was initially to help improve the length of the tourist season for the small riverside town of Dartmouth and its tourism based businesses.
We have over 100 acts performing in over 20 closely sited town venues. These include churches, arts centre, restaurants and hotels. Our main area (centred around wonderful gardens and bandstand) is next to the river’s edge, surrounded with cafes and bars. There are many open air street-based performances making for a constant buzz of enjoyment over all three days. Many of the musicians, both amateur and professional, are from the West Country but we strive to be inclusive and attract national and international acts.
We are a not-for-profit organisation and have formed a ‘Dart Music Foundation’ whereby young hopefuls can apply for grants to help with music lessons, equipment and other associated costs relating to their musical progression.
